The workshop will take place at the Physik-Institut, located at the 'Irchel' campus of Universität Zürich.

How to find the institut

Zurich is easily reached by train , plane or car .

a) arriving by train

All long-distance trains stop at Zürich main station ('Hauptbahnhof').

Taxi stands are located just outside the station, exit 'Bahnhofstrasse'. A taxi ride to Irchel campus will cost you approximately 20CHF.

Public transport (by tram) is excellent and takes only a few minutes longer. Tram stop 'Bahnhofplatz/HB' is located just outside the station, exit 'Bahnhofstrasse'. Take (either):

  • Tram 10 (final destination 'Milchbuck' or 'Bahnhof Oerlikon') to stop 'Irchel' (approx. 13 minutes), OR
  • Tram 14 (final destination 'Seebach') to stop 'Milchbuck' (approx. 10 minutes).
From either stop, it is a short walk up to the Physik-Institut. Signs at the tram stops will guide you to the campus.

b) arriving by plane

A taxi ride from Zurich airport ('Flughafen Kloten') will cost you approximately 35CHF.

Again, a cheaper and not much slower alternative is provided by using public transport. Trains to 'Zürich Hauptbahnhof' (main station) go up to 8 times per hour and the ride takes approximately 10 minutes. From Hauptbahnhof, take Tram 10 or 14 as described above.

c) arriving by car

Our recommendation is NOT to come by car. Parking space is difficult to find and/or very expensive. If you want to come by car, here is a short description on how to reach 'Irchel - Parkhaus', the underground parking directly underneath the campus:

... by motorway A1 from Basel/Bern

  • at 'Limmattaler Kreuz' follow motorway A3 direction 'Winterthur,St.Gallen'
  • at 'Autobahndreieck Zürich Ost', follow signs to 'Zürich, Chur, Luzern'
  • take exit 'Zürich Schwamendingen' and follow signs to 'Irchel', and 'Irchel - Parkhaus'.

... by motorway A1 from St.Gallen

  • at 'Autobahndreieck Zürich Ost', follow signs to 'Zürich, Chur, Luzern'
  • take exit 'Zürich Schwamendingen' and follow signs to 'Irchel', and 'Irchel - Parkhaus'.

... by motorway A3 from Chur, Luzern, Gotthard

  • follow motorway A3 until the end, then keep following signs to 'Transit,Winterthur'. The route takes you across the rather long 'Hardturm-Brücke', then uphill through 'Rosengartenstrasse' and through a tunnel underneath 'Bucheggplatz';
  • coming out of the tunnel, turn right and follow signs to 'Irchel - Parkhaus'.
From the parking deck, take the elevator to the "F" floor to reach the campus.

How to find the Physik-Institut

The Physik-Institut is located on the 'J' floor of Building 36, the second-last building on your left as you walk uphill through the campus. This map and 3D view of the Irchel campus may help you to orient yourself. For the duration of the meeting, we will also install signs pointing the way to the Institute.

Tram Tickets and Prices

Public transport tickets can be purchased from ticket machines at each tram stop, see the excellent description provided by ZVV. The distributors give change but accept only coins.

To reach the institute from 'Hauptbahnhof', you need a ticket for 'Zone 10' (blue button for a one-way ticket, green button for a 24h day pass). Don't forget to press the '1/2' button if you are the proud owner of an SBB 'Halbtax / Abonnement Demi-Prix' card.

From the airport, you need to press the red button for a one-way ticket. This ticket is valid for train and tram.

ZVV also provide an online timetable.

For those who want to leave their car in 'Irchel Parkhaus': expect to pay approximately 20CHF per 24 hours.

Looking forward to seeing you in Zürich!
